Navarro County Sheriff's Deputies, the SPCA of Dallas and representatives from the Navarro County District Attorney's office have busted a cockfighting ring in the rural Navarro County community of Emmett, south of the town of Frost.
The bust happened around 2 Saturday afternoon when the officials raided the property off Farm-to-Market 1578 in Western Navarro County.
Roughly 70 people were believed to be on the property at the time of the raid, with 40 being caught at the scene. The others ran away on foot.
Agents found over 150 roosters at the ring. They are being taken in by the SPCA.
Cockfighting is illegal in Texas, the people detained today could face misdemeanor charges for gambling. Organizers could also face cruelty to animals charges as well.
Similar raids have occured in Navarro County before, in March of 2008 officers seized $170,000 in a cockfighting bust of nearly 300 people.
In August of that year the SPCA captured 150 birds in a raid north of Corsicana.
