Quick summary: Trials and Appeals in Civil Seizure Cases Involving Cruelly Treated Animals Information Sheet (PDF file) and Worksheet to Calculate Amount of Appeal Bonds (XLS file).

Trials and Appeals in Civil Seizure Cases Involving Cruelly Treated Animals

The Texas Health and Safety Code, Title 10, Chapter 821, Subchapter B governs the seizure and disposition of cruelly treated animals.

Given the complexity of determining the cost of care for animals in these situations, THLN asked a group of lawyers and animal welfare advocates to draft the information and guidelines for judges, lawyers, and others who may be involved in the process. The information is not legal advice and should not be construed as such. It is intended to inform and generate awareness of the statute, and provide a starting point for administering it. The following are included in the information sheet:

  • A summary of the trial and appeal process
  • A copy of Texas Health and Safety Code, Chapter 821, Subchapter B
  • A Listing of Typical Housing and Care Costs
  • A Worksheet to Calculate the Amount of an Appeal Bond
