The Bexar County Sheriff's Office has broken up a cockfighting ring, seizing $42,000, cages, blades, harnesses and 140 live roosters.
Sheriff's deputies, helped by a Texas Department of Public Safety helicopter, raided a property Sunday off Loop 1604 in Southwest Bexar County after confirming that a number of people had convened there to bet on rooster fights, according to Deputy Chief Dale Bennett.
As officers entered, the crowd scattered from the arena and pen area, some trying to drive away and others running, he said.
Deputies cited 74 people for their participation and impounded 26 vehicles left unclaimed, pending identification by their owners, Bennett said.
Animal Care Services helped remove 160 roosters, 20 of which were dead, Bennett said.
